Course Learning Objectives
At the end of this course you will be able to:
 
Understand import and export process, and determine how import/export will benefit to your company and create prioritized list of benefits.
Assess your company's readiness and product potential to go international and identify specific areas of preparation.
Identify the major import and export documents required by banks, governments and transportation companies. Discuss roles of Freight forwarders and Custom House Brokers.
Evaluate payment options including letter of credit and select those most appropriate for your company. Understand Incoterm-2000 and how best to use them.
Assess the value and potential of trade shows as they relate to your company.
Identify public and private import/export financing options and select those that best suite to your company’s need.
Analyze market research tools and trade leads to help facilitate your company’s market entry.
Write your Import/Export Business Plan (Optional).
 
Module I: Import and Export Process and Requirements- examines the steps you must take to clear merchandise through Customs including filing for entry, calculating duty, classifying products using the Harmonized Schedule (HS), inspection of goods, and liquidation by which Customs determines the final duty and any applicable taxes. This module will also identify basic export concepts, company readiness to import or export, evaluate product and country potential including identifying assistance programs that will help your company become competitive in the targeted market.
 
Module II: Import and Export Documents- covers the most common documents used in the import and export transaction. Compares the different categories of international trade documents including commercial, banking, transportation, insurance and government control documents. Emphasis will be given to Customs documents, Export Declaration, Proforma Invoice, Commercial Invoice and Bill of Lading.
 
Module III: Import and Export Payments and Financing- Identifies and discusses payment options including open account, prepayment, documentary collection and letter of credit. This Module will help analyze the risk associated with each payment methods, discusses the major advantages and discrepancies of letter of credit and identifies import and export financing options.
 
Module IV: Marketing Imported Products and Export Marketing - discusses marketing techniques that you can use once the product clears Customs. The marketing mix product, price, place (distribution), promotion will be addressed. This Module will also examine the differences between domestic and international marketing, role of distributors and agents, tariff and non tariff barriers as well as international promotion assistances.
 
Module V: Import and Export Shipping and Insurance - Examines INCOTERMS 2000 by identifying the responsibilities of importers and exporters in a transaction. Discusses the role of Custom House Brokers and Freight Forwarders, the different insurance coverage’s, costs associated with import and export shipment and benefits from Foreign Trade Zone, ATA Carnet and other temporary importation concepts.
 
Module VI: Import and Export Legal and Cultural- Covers how foreign laws can impact product marketability, discusses the importance of sales agreement and cultural do’s and don’ts when conducting business in the international markets.
